Regular manicures and pedicures can help a lot to enjoy well maintained and beautiful hands and legs. Professional manicures and pedicures are relaxing but at the same time very expensive and time consuming process.

Instead of making an appointment at an expensive salon for a relaxing and pampering manicure and pedicure session, you can easily do-it-yourself at home. DIY manicure and pedicure can be easily done at home in less than a half hour and the results look highly professional.

Before you begin with your home manicure and pedicure procedure, you need to have some essential things that are easily available in the market.

Home Manicure

Things required for home manicure:

  • nail file
  • nail cutter
  • cuticle remover
  • cuticle cream
  • orange stick
  • hand moisturizer
  • few cotton balls
  • nail polish
  • nail polish remover

Steps for home manicure:

Step 1: With the help of a cotton ball dipped in nail polish remover, remove all your previous nail polish until your true nail color is revealer. Remember to use little nail polish remover sparingly as it can extremely dry out your nails and cuticles.

Step 2: Soak the hands in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Rinse with clean water, pat dry your hands and then apply a cuticle cream and push back the cuticles with an orange stick.

Step 3: Now you need to cut and shape your nails with a nail cutter or scissors. File the rough edges of your nail surface using a filer to smooth the nails and give them a proper shape. You can cut and shape your nails as per your desired choice.

Step 4: Apply a hand lotion and massage your hands and arms using circular movements. You can even use a mild scrubber to remove dead skin cells and to soften the skin.

Step 5: Rinse off the hands and nails properly to remove oil particles and then apply fresh nail polish if desired.

Home Pedicure

Things required for home pedicure:

  • foot soak
  • foot file
  • nail clippers
  • foot scrub
  • moisturizing foot cream
  • toe separators
  • few cotton balls
  • cuticle remover
  • cuticle cream
  • nail polish remover
  • nail polish

Steps for a home pedicure:

Step 1: Take a cotton ball and dip it in nail polish remover and then use to remove nail polish from your toenails.

Step 2: Next, soak your feet for at least ten minutes in warm water. This will help to soften the calluses. If you wish you can even add little soap or shampoo or few drops of essence oils or salt to the hot water for extra exfoliating power.

Step 3: Trim the toenails short and straight across with the help of a nail clipper. This step is very important as it helps to prevent ingrown toenails.

Step 4: Smooth out the rough spots or tough calluses from your feet with the help a pumice stone. If you have extremely dry feet, use a foot scrub. Rinse off the dead skin cells with clean water and pat dry your feet.

Step 5: Once clear of the dead skin cells, buff the nails and apply nail polish if desired. For toenails it is better to choose a light, neutral color.

Step 6: Finally use a thick foot cream on your feet to smooth rough dry skin.

Additional tips:

  • For manicure and pedicure, avoid using very hot water for soaking your hands or feet, as this can dry out the skin and nails.
  • Do not use hard nail brushes as it can cause permanent damage to the nail beds.
  • Never cut cuticles as it can lead to infection.
  • You can opt for home pedicure and manicure process in every two weeks.
