To avoid looking like a clown, here are some tips to choose blush and apply it in a proper manner.

  1. First choose the color of your blush using nature as your guide. Opt for a shade that matches the skin color of your cheeks when they are flushed after exercise or being out in the cold. Another option for choosing the right shade is to go for one that matches your lip color.
  2. Select a color that will accent your facial features. Bright red may not look great on a pale person but can be terrific on a bronzed brown skin tone. Those having fair skin tone can opt for blush shades in rose, olive and peach, while those having dark skin tone can choose apricot or even red color blush.
  3. Now that you have the color, choose the right formula for your skin type. Powder is typically best for oily and combination skin type. Cream is great for dry skin. Liquid and gel are great for oily skin. For even better results, combine cream and powder together.
  4. Apply foundation, eye color and lipstick and then only apply your blush. While blush is usually your second-to-last makeup step (before powder), you should experiment with what works best for you. Some people prefer to apply blush before applying foundation for a more ‘natural’ looking makeup.
  5. To apply blush like a profession, do not use the small blush brush that comes with the blush. Use a professional full brush instead, but don’t use the same brush you use for your powder. First put the blush on your brush (after tapping off any excess product), then look into the mirror and smile. This way you can locate the ‘apple’ of your cheek and gently apply the blush on that area of your face only. Keep color light and blended. If you’re using gel or cream, dab it on with your middle finger, and then blend with your ring and middle finger. The clean finger will pick up any excess blush. For a more youthful look, make sure to apply the blush on each side.
  6. In case the powder blush you applied on your cheeks have become heavy a bit of translucent powder over it will calm it down. For cream blush, blot the color off with a clean tissue paper. If you are using gel and liquid blush, it will stain the cheeks which you can be corrected by washing your face only. After washing your face, apply some moisturizer and then reapply your makeup carefully.
  7. Purchase some quality blush brushes. A blush brush is the best choice; never use a small, cheap brush. If you use a cheap brush, you’ll not have a good result. Avoid using cotton balls or powder puffs to apply blush as such products are not meant to work well with the pigment in the blush. Also clean your brushes with baby wipes. If you don’t keep your brushes clean, they’ll gather bacteria and can cause skin infection.

To sum up, next time when you are shopping or applying blush, just remember the above mentioned tips and nothing can stop you from enjoy natural looking makeup and accentuating your facial features to the best.
